Tossing the Jade Pearl
Tossing The Jade Pearl – Finding Yi (Intent)
There's a concept in Tai Chi that took me a long time to really understand. Yi (意). People translate it different ways. Intent. Directed awareness. The mind arriving somewhere before the body does. That last one is the one that clicked for me.
The old teachers had a saying: Yi leads the Qi, and Qi leads the body. Whether Qi means something mystical to you or just the way your body coordinates itself naturally, the point holds. The mind goes first. The body catches up.
What we're doing today is practicing Yi without moving a single muscle.
Getting Settled
Find a comfortable stance, feet roughly shoulder width. Let your knees go a little soft but not too bent, just not locked. Imagine something lifting the crown of your head from above, and let your spine respond to that. Your face is relaxed. Shoulders easy. Elbows heavy. Hands resting at your sides.
The Gift of the Pearl
Bring your attention to your right hand. The hand isn't going anywhere, but picture someone placing a jade pearl into your open palm. And I mean feel it, not just see it. The weight of it. The coolness of the stone. The way it presses gently against your fingers.
Your hand is still. Your mind moves.
Giving It Life
Without moving, start to imagine bouncing the pearl lightly. Feel it lift and fall. The weight seems to ease as it rises. Then it settles back, and the heaviness returns. Your breath stays quiet. Nothing physical about you shifts visibly.
Only you mind moves.
Gifting the Pearl
On an exhale, toss the pearl forward, smooth, underhand, unhurried. Don't move your arm. Let only the Yi go. Watch it leave. Watch it move through the air. I am there on the other end to receive it.
Your breath carried the intention. The expression happened without any muscular force. It is an outward motion. That's Yang.
The Gift Returns
Breathe in. I toss the pearl back to you, into your left hand this time. Your hand remains still and by your side. Let it land in your mind. Feel the weight you already know. There's a difference between receiving and grabbing. This is softly receiving. This is an inward motion. Yin Energy.
My Yang presents. Your Yin accepts. And receiving, it turns out, asks just as much of your attention as sending does.
Moving Awareness
Without shifting your arms, picture the pearl traveling slowly from your left hand across to your right. Watch as it moves. Feel your awareness following it.
Now toss it forward to me again with your right hand and wait to catch it back with your left hand. Let that become a quiet rhythm. A circle. Maintain your posture and coordinate your breath as you give the pearl and receive it back. An outward breath (Yin) as you toss the pearl to me (Yang) and an inward breath (Yang) as you receive it back (Yin).
The Lesson
In this practice your body doesn’t move. Your mind moves and your breath follows. The Qi flows because Yin and Yang are in motion (even if this motion only happens in your mind).
Once you have experienced this we can add physical movement into this equation to achieve the mind, body, breath connection which is the fundamental principle of Tai Chi.
